Premier League free transfers: Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin De Bruyne could leave for nothing

Premier League free transfers: Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin De Bruyne could leave for nothing

Now the transfer window is open, players across the Premier League are entering the final six months of their deals, meaning they can negotiate a free transfer with clubs outside England.

Here, VidSport Live News runs through all 20 clubs and assesses the situations of the players whose contracts are currently set to expire in the summer. There are some high-profile names in there...

Jorginho

The midfielder, 33, signed what was described as a "short-term" extension over the summer, but there has been no word on his future beyond that and he has been restricted to just five league starts this season.

Thomas Partey

Approaching the end of the five-year deal he signed when arriving from Atletico Madrid for £45m in 2020, the 31-year-old faces an uncertain future despite being a regular starter in the first half of the season.

Kieran Tierney

Since returning from a season-long loan in Spain with Real Sociedad, the left-back has made just one appearance for Arsenal after picking up a hamstring injury with Scotland at Euro 2024 and could be set for another move away this month.

Tierney's boyhood club Celtic are considering a move for the defender, which could see them agree a pre-contract deal and sign him on loan for the remainder of the season.

Robin Olsen

The 34-year-old has made one appearance for Aston Villa this season while providing back-up for Emi Martinez and, as it stands, there has been no decision on his future beyond the summer.

Kourtney Hause

The 29-year-old defender's future is unlikely to be at Aston Villa beyond the summer, having not played for the club since January 2022.

None.

Ben Mee

The 35-year-old defender, who arrived on a two-year deal in 2022 after leaving Burnley, was a mainstay in his first season at Brentford, but has since lost his place in the team because of injury problems.

Brentford extended his stay by an extra year last summer, but having been restricted to just two starts from their opening 18 league matches, it is unclear if he will be kept on for another season.

Christian Norgaard

Brentford have an option to extend their captain's contract by a further year, so are in no danger of losing him on a free transfer in the short-term. The midfielder has been at the club since 2019.

Josh Dasilva

Like Norgaard, the midfielder extended his Brentford stay over the summer, and the club have an option to keep him for a further 12 months. Injuries have blighted him in recent years, however, and he is yet to play this season.

James Milner

Turning 39 in January, there is no certainty Brighton will offer the veteran midfielder an extension beyond his current terms, as he has made just three appearances heading into the window.

Joel Veltman

The 33-year-old right-back remains a key player for Brighton under Fabian Hurzeler and he told The Athletic in December that he wants to stay.

Veltman, who was signed from Ajax in 2020 for less than £1m, says there is an option in his deal to extend his stay that will likely be discussed early in 2025.

Tariq Lamptey

Over the summer, clubs in England, Italy and Germany explored the conditions of a deal for the Brighton defender, whose progress until that point had stalled due to a string of injuries, but nothing materialised.

There have been signs of a resurgence from the full-back in the first half of the season under Hurzeler, with five goal contributions in the first half of the season, but the deal he signed in January 2021 is set to expire at the end of the season.

Jakub Moder

The 25-year-old mifielder was kept to just four minutes in the first half of the season ahead of the expiry of his contract in the summer.

Imari Samuels

Brighton's 21-year-old left-back has made one senior appearance this season, a start in the Carabao Cup, spending most of his time with the U21s.

Lucas Bergstrom

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been on loan to two clubs since joining Chelsea in 2022, but has never played for the Blues. He signed a one-year deal until this summer in February 2024.

Will Hughes

Enjoying a renaissance under Oliver Glasner, the 29-year-old has become a key player for Crystal Palace and has featured in all but two of their league matches.

His contract was extended by a year at the end of last season and, based on his usage and performances in this campaign, it would come as a surprise if he is not offered a new contract before the summer.

Nathaniel Clyne

In his second spell at Crystal Palace, the 33-year-old defender signed a one-year deal in the summer. He has been used as a squad option by Glasner this season and it remains to be seen if he will be offered new terms.

Joel Ward

Palace's club captain, 35, finds himself in a similar contract situation to Clyne, having signed a new deal at the end of last season, but has found game-time harder to come by with just one appearance off the bench so far.

Jeffrey Schlupp

The 32-year-old utility player saw an option in his deal exercised at the end of last season, but has been restricted to substitute appearances in the first half of this campaign.

Remi Matthews

The back-up goalkeeper was another whose year-long extension was announced at the end of last season. Having made just one appearance for Palace since 2021, it is unclear what the club's plans are for him.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton could lose their striker for free if a new deal is not agreed before the end of the season. Talks have reportedly taken place, but an extension is yet to materialise.

Michael Keane

The 31-year-old has enjoyed more game-time in the first half of this season due to Jarrad Branthwaite's injury problems but, unless an agreement can be found, the centre-back's Everton career will end in the summer.

Idrissa Gueye

Everton triggered an option in the 35-year-old midfielder's deal ahead of last summer and he has remained a key player this season, featuring in most games in the first half of the campaign.

Abdoulaye Doucoure

The midfielder signed a two-year deal in 2023 and at the time it was reported Everton have an option to extend that by a further year. The 32-year-old remains a key player for Everton, having started most games in the first half of the season.

Ashley Young

The defender turns 40 in the summer, but continues to be a useful squad player at Everton under Sean Dyche. His one-year extension, which is up at the end of the season, was announced in the summer, so we may be waiting until then for another update.

Seamus Coleman

Everton's captain did not make his mind up over signing his current one-year deal until the summer so, like Young, it could be another one that is decided at the end of the season. The 36-year-old has played a limited role so far.

Asmir Begovic

The veteran goalkeeper rejoined Everton on a one-year deal last summer to provide back-up to Jordan Pickford and act as a leader in the dressing room. His future beyond that is uncertain as it stands.

Tom Cairney

Fulham's captain will complete a decade of service when his current deal expires this summer, but nothing has been agreed beyond that to extend his stay.

The midfielder continues to be useful for Fulham off the bench and has said retiring at the club would be a "dream scenario".

Adama Traore

Fulham signed the pacey winger on a five-year contract after he left Wolves on a free transfer which expires this summer, but the deal included the option of an additional 12 months.

Raul Jimenez

The striker's Fulham contract expires at the end of the season, but he told VidSport Live in December he is hoping the club will trigger a one-year extension clause. He said: "I'm happy here in Fulham, I'm happy here in London. It's a really good city, a really good club that I like. If it's activated, I'll be really happy."

Kenny Tete

Fulham activated such an option in the right-back's deal at the end of last season, but he is currently out with a long-term leg problem.

The 29-year-old, who struggled for game-time last season, had been a mainstay for Marco Silva prior to his injury, starting in all but one of their games.

Carlos Vinicius

Fulham also have an option to extend the Brazilian striker's contract, but he has been limited to just one league appearance this season, with Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz also competing for the same position.

Axel Tuanzebe

When the defender joined on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 after leaving Manchester United, Ipswich said it was a one-year deal while reports elsewhere added that the contract included an option for a further year.

There was no confirmation of that but, according to transfermarkt, the 27-year-old's deal runs until this summer.

Massimo Luongo

The midfielder, 32, has played a bit-part role in the first half of the Premier League season and it is unclear what his future holds beyond the summer. He came out of international retirement in October to represent Australia during their World Cup qualifiers.

Cameron Burgess

The defender's contract was origninally due to expire last summer but included an option to extend for a further year. The 29-year-old continues to be used, largely as a squad player, in the Premier League.

Luke Woolfenden

There was no mention of such an option in the 26-year-old defender's deal when it was announced by Ipswich in 2022. He has continued to get minutes since promotion to the Premier League, although not consistently as a starter.

Jamie Vardy

The striker, who turns 38 in January, signed a one-year deal last summer and it could be as late as that in 2025 when he makes a decision on whether to continue. He reached the halfway point of the season as Leicester's top scorer in the league.

Danny Ward

Leicester's back-up goalkeeper continues to get his minutes in the cup competitions, saving three penalties in a Carabao Cup shoot-out win over Walsall earlier this season.

The Wales international, a Foxes player since 2018, last signed a deal in 2021 and will need to agree another one if he to stay longer.

Daniel Iversen

Having not played for Leicester this season amid strong competition for the goalkeeping position, the 27-year-old Dane will be leaving unless an agreement is reached to keep him as back-up beyond this summer.

Virgil van Dijk

The Liverpool captain, 33, says there is "no deadline" over talks for a new contract as the club continue negotiations with his representatives. He said in December that he has four more years left playing at the top level.

VidSport Live News understands that it has been very apparent Van Dijk wants to stay during talks.

Mohamed Salah

The same, it is understood, goes for Salah. He is said to love living in Liverpool, where his daughters go to school, and is not keen on moving. He wants to be a Liverpool legend and keep breaking records at Anfield.

But, as with Van Dijk, there is still no resolution over a new contract and, as it stands, the 32-year-old forward will be a free agent at the end of the season and he said an agreement was "far away" at the end of December.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

There is a contrast in talks with Alexander-Arnold, who is also out of contract in the summer and wanted by Real Madrid.

The Spanish champions have a track record of picking up stars on free transfers, signing Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba in recent years, and are hoping to do the same with the England international.

Ahead of the transfer window, there has been growing noise around a potential move to Madrid. Liverpool, though, will want to keep their academy product and preserve his value by signing him to a new deal.

Ilkay Gundogan

When the midfielder returned to Man City from Barcelona over the summer, he signed a one-year deal that included the option for a further 12 months.

Amid the club's current struggles and Pep Guardiola's admission that a rebuild is required, there is a lack of certainty around which players will be kept on next season.

Kevin De Bruyne

City's revamping of their squad very well may progress without their star midfielder, who told reporters at the end of December that there had been "no movement" over talks for a new deal.

The 33-year-old, who has struggled for fitness this season due to injury problems, said over the summer he did not know where his future lay beyond his current deal, but denied any talks had taken place over a move to Saudi Arabia.

Scott Carson

Manchester City and the veteran goalkeeper, with two appearances at the club since 2019, are unlikely to announce a decision on his future until toward the end of the season. The 39-year-old is third-choice at the Etihad.

Amad Diallo

Manchester United's breakout star of the season is coming to the end of his contract in the summer, but the club have the option to extend his deal by a further year.

The attacking midfielder, 22, has previously said he wants to spend a long time at United.

Harry Maguire

United hold an option to extend their former captain's contract by another year and the 31-year-old has said "positive" talks have been held over a new deal.

Having been stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag, it would be remarkable comeback story for the centre-back if an extension is agreed.

Jonny Evans

A short-term deal for the veteran defender to regain fitness over a pre-season has become a two-year stay in his second spell at Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old, brought back to the club by Ten Hag, continues to be used as a squad player by Ruben Amorim, but it is yet to be agreed if that will extend beyond this season.

Christian Eriksen

The midfielder, who turns 33 in February, is one of the few players at United whose deal does not include a club-held option to extend it by a further year.

The Denmark international said earlier this season that he had not held talks over an extension.

Victor Lindelof

United exercised the option in the 30-year-old defender's contract to keep him until this summer so he is free to leave if he does not feel his future lies at Old Trafford. Injury has restricted him to nine appearances this season.

Tom Heaton

United's third-choice goalkeeper, 38, signed a one-year deal last summer but has not been used by the first team since then.

Callum Wilson

The Newcastle striker is out with a hamstring problem that is likely to sideline him for the first part of 2025, leaving his future uncertain, having managed just four appearances so far in an injury-plagued season.

Fabian Schar

Newcastle need to agree new terms with the 33-year-old defender if he is continue beyond the summer, but he said in November that he would "love to stay". Eddie Howe continues to rely on him at centre-back.

Sean Longstaff

The Athletic report that an option in the midfielder's deal has been triggered by Newcastle, which would extend his deal until the summer of 2026. As yet there has been no official announcement.

Newcastle had to make sales last summer to stay in line with the league's financial rules so it is unlikely they would allow an academy graduate to leave for free, given they represent pure profit on the books when a sale occurs.

Jamaal Lascelles

Newcastle exercised an option in their captain's contract last season, but it remains unclear what the future holds for the defender beyond this summer. The 31-year-old is yet to play this season, having deputised regularly for Sven Botman when he was injured in the previous campaign.

Martin Dubravka

Newcastle's understudy goalkeeper has performed well in the absence of the injured Nick Pope this season, but reports have linked him with a move to the Saudi Arabian Pro League ahead of his contract expiring.

Emil Krafth

Injury has kept the defender's minutes to a minimum in the first half of the season after he signed a one-year deal last summer. The 30-year-old has been consistent when called in as defensive back-up.

John Ruddy

Newcastle signed their third-choice goalkeeper to a one-year deal last summer and it is unclear at this stage if it will be extended further. The 38-year-old is yet to feature for the club.

Mark Gillespie

The 32-year-old academy graduate, who returned to the club from Motherwell in 2020, had an option in his deal activated at the end of last season to keep him until this summer after Loris Karius left the club.

Chris Wood

Nottingham Forest's striker has been one of the season's surprise packages, scoring 11 goals in 19 games in the first half of the Premier League campaign, but his deal is up in the summer.

The Athletic reported in November that talks were being held over an extension for the 33-year-old, who is unlikely to be short of options if he keeps up his goalscoring form.

Ola Aina

Forest activated an option in the full-back's contract last season, which means as it stands the 28-year-old will be a free agent come the summer unless a new agreement can be reached.

Willy Boly

Forest have the option to extend Boly's deal by a further year with his current contract expiring in the summer. The defender, 33, has been used sparingly by Nuno Espirito Santo in the first half of the season, but is consintently named in matchday squads.

Harry Toffolo

Forest will need to find a new agreement with the 29-year-old left-back if he is to extend his stay at the club beyond this season, having activated an option in his contract to keep him until the summer of 2025.

Kyle Walker-Peters

There was uncertainty around the Southampton full-back's future in the summer and there has been no resolution over a new deal since as he enters the final six months of his contract.

The 27-year-old remains a key player for Southampton, who are unlikely to be keen to lose him on a free transfer.

Adam Lallana

The 36-year-old returned to Southampton on a one-year deal last summer. When the time comes to call time on his career, the midfielder is expected to go into coaching.

Joe Lumley

Southampton's back-up goalkeeper signed a one-year deal until "at least" summer 2025 and there has been no update on his future since then. He has made four apperances this season covering for Aaron Ramsdale.

Heung-Min Son

Tottenham are expected to exercise the one-year option in their captain's contract. The 32-year-old is approaching his 11th season at Spurs and continues to be a key member of their squad.

Fraser Forster

Asked to step up this season due to Guglielmo Vicario's injury, Spurs' back-up goalkeeper could move on in the summer unless a new deal is agreed. His last contract, up at the end of the season, was announced in December 2023.

Ben Davies

Ange Postecogou has repurposed the left-back into a centre-back over the past two seasons and he appears to be the Spurs boss' preferred stand-in when Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are unavailable.

Reports claim that, like Son, he has an option in his deal which means Spurs can trigger to keep him for another year.

Sergio Reguilon

The 28-year-old has fallen out of favour at Spurs and as it stands is not expected to stay beyond this season. Appearances off the bench toward the end of 2024 have only come amid a defensive injury crisis.

Alfie Whiteman

The 26-year-old goalkeeper, an academy product, signed a deal in February 2023 that runs until the end of this season, but has not played for Spurs since making his debut in the Europa League in 2020.

Aaron Cresswell

The 35-year-old left-back signed a one-year contract extension over the summer and as it stands will be a free agent in the summer. He made seven appearances under Julen Lopetegui in the first half of the season.

Michail Antonio

The striker's season is likely over after he suffered a horrifc leg injury in a road-traffic incident at the end of 2024 and, as it stands, is out of contract in the summer. It is unclear what the future holds for the 34-year-old.

Danny Ings

The 32-year-old's deal is up at the end of the season and there has been no indication thus far if his stay will be extended. The striker has been a squad player for the last few seasons, mainly used off the bench.

Vladimir Coufal

West Ham's right-back told VidSport Live at the end of last season that there had been talks over a new deal, but as yet no agreement has been reached. He remains a useful squad player for West Ham under Lopetegui.

Lukasz Fabianski

The Athletic report that West Ham have an option to extend the 39-year-old's contract for another year and his performances this season have shown he is still more than capable of competing for the No 1 spot.

Pablo Sarabia

Having been used sparingly in the Premier League this season it is unclear what the future holds for the 32-year-old midifelder beyond this season. He last appeared in a matchday squad at the end of November.

Craig Dawson

Wolves have long relied on the 34-year-old to keep them solid at the back and are now hoping to reinforce the centre-back position in January. As yet, there has been no word on what the future holds for Dawson beyond the summer.

Mario Lemina

Wolves have some breathing room with the midfielder, who was stripped of the captaincy by former boss Gary O'Neil earlier in the season, due to an option they have to extend his deal by a further year.

The 31-year-old featured in all of Wolves' league games in the first half of the season before picking up a calf injury in December.

Nelson Semedo

The newly-appointed captain of Wolves had an option in his contract activated in 2023, but his time at the club could be up unless a new deal is struck before the summer.
